Graz City Guide


Found in the southeastern area of Austria, Graz is a combination of the old and the new. It is also known as the second largest city in Austria after Vienna. Populated by over 291,000 residents, Graz is located along the river banks of Mur in the state of Styria. Travelling around the city will give you much insight to the rich culture and lifestyle of the people living there. There are about six universities with over 44,000 students situated around the area. Graz is also made popular by the famous tourist destination “Old Town” that was actually recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage list for its harmonious depiction of historically acclaimed architectural styles that range from contemporary to Gothic. Since Graz is located around the southeast of the Alps, the city is shielded from extreme weather fronts brought by the westerly winds. Graz is known for its Mediterranean weather that allows more sunshine compared to the other cities like Vienna and Salzburg. However, the city may be a bit prone to smog during the winter due to the less windy climate. Graz’s history dates back to the Copper Age. However, it was officially settled in the Middle ages. During the time of the Roman Empire, the city of Graz was the place where a small fort was built. It was called the Schlossberg Graz hill located in the middle of the city. As time passed, Slavic people began to move in and put up an even larger fort on the same hill. They called it Gradec, which means castle in the Slovene tongue. This is where Graz got its name from. Now, Graz is more popularly known for its wonderful architecture with its museums and the site of the Old Town. You will have an artistic experience looking into buildings with more modern architecture only to transfer to another building with baroque architecture. Truly the mix of old and new is very strong in this city. You can also find ancient ruins and castles within the city. There are also parks where you can take a nice relaxing walk that would give you a view of nature. The great thing about this city is that there are many things to do here to entertain yourself. You can go to the casinos to try your luck or experience some nightlife in their clubs that host great parties and plays good music. There are artistic performances and the local theater if you’re not into partying much. You can also engage in sports if you like. Anytime would be a great time to travel to Graz. The climate is not too hot in the summers or too cold in the winter, so you can still have a great time no matter what the season is. However, if you want to get the ultimate experience when during your visit to the city of Graz, you can come around springtime, which is around the end of March. This is a perfect opportunity for you to witness the lush greenery and you get to walk through a light and gentle breeze.
