Fluweengrot Limburg’s oldest marlstone caves or ‘Mergelgrotten’ is another great place to visit in this town. Discovered just in 1937, the tunnels resulted from marlstone formation. The mudstone which is rich in lime and calcium carbonate contain a great amount of aragonite and clay. It is assumed that the formation took place at around 11th or 12th century. The marls or mudstones found in these caves are said to be used as brick stones for constructing structures like the great castle of Valkenburg. Interesting carvings and charcoal drawings that tell stories and legends of the past can also be found in these mystical caves.
