The remains of a castle hovering on top of a hill in the heart of Valkenburg create a fascinating scene that is historical and enchanting at the same time. Conquest and siege are two significant qualities of this city’s history. Successive restorations are what used to follow every event that is withheld. However, in December 1672, the castle had been destroyed but never rebuilt. Only the Gredelpoort and the Berkelpoort, two of the city gates, along with some parts of the city walls withstood the destruction. While Valkenburg may no longer be an armed city, it is still nevertheless important. The lineage of its rulers may have gone with the wind, but the legend of the birthmark on the chest of a male with a royal blood still lingers. This romantic little city that lies below the lone hilltop castle in the country has been a very famous holiday resort even a hundred years ago. In the past centuries, Valkenburg’s main attractions had been it caves and castle remains that are wonderfully historical. Add to that the fact that this city has the oldest functioning railroad station in the entire Netherlands. But now, it can also cater to those tourists who prefer a more relaxed and a more quiet behavior. As a matter of fact, the cit is very well-known for hosting cycling events. It holds a record for hosting the UCI Road Cycling World Championships for four times (1938, 1948, 1979, and 1998). Aside from that, Cauberg hill has been the finish of the Amstel Gold Race since 2003. The town can provide a very convenient place for going around and getting what you need because amenities, along with all the shops, are not far from the bus stations. It has a modern relaxation and recreation center that proudly presents a bowling alley with ten pins. After having exhausted yourself with all the activities, you’ll most probably feel like eating. In Valkenburg, getting hungry is no big problem. The heart of the city is littered with bars and restaurants that can cater to every taste and that can surely satisfy hunger. Most people know the country as a flat landscape. The hilly place close to Valkenburg makes it a very interesting destination.
