Knokke-Heist Guide

Besides enjoying the water and the wind along the beach promenade lined with cafes and restaurants, some of the sites worth visiting at Knokke-Heist are: The Zwin This used to be a marshy land by the North Sea. Dikes were built around it and became a settlement. It is now a nature preserve that also serves as a border between the Netherlands and Belgium. In it could be found a zoo filled with domestic birds like storks, geese, snipes, plovers, and ducks. Special salt-resistant flowers like the Sea Lavender also grow on it. The Royal Zoute Golf Club Built in 1909, this golf club is patronized by Belgian jetsetters. It rests at the center of the city and makes it easily reachable for tourists, completely blending in and reinforcing the image of Knokke-Heist as a “place for the rich and famous”. It has a Championship Course that has hosted the European Tour’s Belgian Open several times. Home to two eighteen-hole courses, it is regarded as one of the best links courses in Europe. Along its perimeter stand a relaxing view of trees and cute houses. The Sincfala Museum This is a national history museum that was built back in 1899. It contains works that depict two thousand year history of the Zwin region and the life of fishermen during that time. It was designed by Rene Buyck in the neo-Gothic style. It temporarily served as the Municipal Public Library back in the 1970s. Today, it is made up of three parts: the Old Gothic Revival School Building where the fishermen’s life on and off a boat is shown; the museum garden where the famous shrimp boat Jessica is showcased; and the Visitor where the two millennia history of Zwin is told. The Butterfly Garden Found at the Zwin, this butterfly garden is open everyday from the Easter holidays until the end of September from 9AM to 7PM. From October to Easter, it is only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9AM to 5PM. It houses over 300 kinds of live butterflies from different countries. Visitors could ven get the chance to observe some stages of the life cycle of a butterfly. This is a wonderful educational experience for both kids and adults. Casino Knokke Comprised of a games room, two nightclubs, and a ballroom, this casino stands erect right across the Albertstrand Beach. Built in the 1920s, it plays host to tourists and international entertainers alike with its elegant style, a smattering of Art Deco, and exquisite chandeliers. Inside is a dining room named after the famous painter Rene Magritte whose works are made into murals in the casino. Admittance requires one to wear formal clothing, present a passport, and be at least 21 years of age.
